The Chick Blog

What is the 'Chick Blog'?

Hello!  Mrs. Dobbs here.  Mrs. Blackstock and I are working together to hatch chicks.  We have an incubator set up the Lower School Computer Lab.  We would love for all the Lower School students to be involved.  When you come to the computer lab, you can peek in, but you can also participate by joining our 'Chick Blog'.  Check in each day, or every few days to see how things are developing.  There will be photos, chicken trivia, questions, incubation updates and more!

We are very excited about this event and hope that you will be too.

Getting Ready For Chicks - Incubator Set-up

What is an incubator?

An incubator is a machine that can be used to hatch chicks.  It keeps the eggs at a specific temperature and humidity level for the incubation period.  Our incubator also has an automatic turner to turn the eggs.  If we did not have a turner, we would have to turn the eggs three times a day by hand.  In nature the mother hen does the job of an incubator, by sitting on the eggs to keep them warm and turning them in the nest.

The incubation period is the amount of time it takes the the chicks to develop inside the egg and then hatch.

March 24 - Day 1 - Eggs Arrive

It is Wednesday, March 24th and the eggs have just arrived!  Thank you to the Canady Family for donating them.

We have had the incubator turned on for two days and the temperature is 100F.  It is ready for the eggs.  There is a thermometer inside the incubator, so that we can moniter the temperature daily and make sure it stays at 100F.  The incubator also has a place for water in the bottom.  It needs water in order for the atmosphere inside the incubator to have the correct level of humidity.  We will add warm water about twice a week and make sure it never dries up.

Monday March 29 - Day 6

How many days does it take for a chicken egg to hatch?

If you know the answer, ask your parents for permission to email me.

The Answer is:  21 days

April 1 - Day 9 - Did you know...

Did you know chickens do not have teeth.

Chicks are born with an 'egg tooth', a sharp part of their beak, which they use to break out of the shell.  The egg tooth falls off soon after the chick has hatched.

April 6 - Day 14 - What will our chicks look like?

There are many different breeds of chicken.  Our eggs were laid by a breed called 'Australorps'.  When our chicks grow up, they will look like this:

Day 21 - First signs of hatching

No chicks yet, but I have seen some of the eggs moving a little, and earlier I even heard a tiny chirp!

Day 21 - hatching update!

It is 3:10 pm. I have just come in from afternoon traffic duty.  The first egg is cracked!!  It's hard to see in the photo, but if you look carefully at the bottom egg, you can just see the crack on the side.

Day 22 - Hatching Day

Check out this short video of one of our chicks hatching!

Day 23 - 18 Fluffy Chicks!

Watch a video of the chicks now they have dried and are fluffy!
